7 Spring cleaning steps to a sleep-friendly bedroom

Now that spring is here and the flowers are blooming, it’s the perfect time to start a spring clean. Considering we spend around a third of our lives sleeping, the bedroom is one of the most used rooms in a home, so giving it a good clean is worth your time and effort.

What’s more, giving your bedroom a good spring clean could help you to sleep better at night and awaken your best. When your sleeping space is clean and organised, it can help you feel more relaxed and prepare yourself for a good night’s sleep, all while improving your overall sleep hygiene.

To help you get started, here are seven ways in which you can spring clean your bedroom this season.

Declutter your sleep environment

The first thing you should do when you start to spring clean your room is to declutter. You should collect up any items that are in your bedroom that don’t belong in there. Then, collect any rubbish you may have gathered and put it in bags ready to throw away or recycle. Add to these bags as you declutter.

Go through your wardrobe and assess each item of clothing. Set aside anything you no longer wear, decide if you want to sell them on a resale website, donate them to charity or if there is something that can’t be repaired and needs throwing out. Clearing and cleaning your wardrobe in spring also gives you the chance to sort out and store your winter clothes and give your spring and summer outfits some room. If you’re tight on space, try storing your bulky jumpers in vacuum bags that can be put on a shelf until you require them later in the year.

Go through any drawers and other storage you have to see if there is anything you’d like to get rid of. This can be a time-consuming task, so just focus on one section of your bedroom at a time.

Treat yourself to some new pillows

Did you know, you should be replacing your pillows every 1-2 years? Pillows play such an important role in helping you get a good night’s sleep, so it’s important to make sure your pillows are giving you the support you need. Pillows can collect dust, attract mites, and grow fungus and mould, all of which can affect your health and your sleep, so it’s best to stay on top of this.

You’ll know it's time to replace your pillows if you start waking up in the morning with a sore neck, or if you find it difficult to get comfortable when you go to bed. A new pillow can help you reduce the chances of an aching neck and will help you feel comfortable. Emma has a range of foam pillows that give additional support to your head and neck, so it may be worth treating yourself to one.

Even if you think your pillows are still in working order, this is the perfect opportunity to clean them, so they’re all fresh for you to get a good night’s sleep and wake up refreshed and ready for the day.

Invest in some lighter bedding

When it comes to your bedding, springtime is the perfect time to look at changing things up for the warmer months ahead. If you tend to run hot in your sleep, this is a great time to get a lower tog duvet, like the Emma Cloud Duvet,  to keep you nice and cool for the summer. Night sweats can wreak havoc on your sleep quality - in fact, a UK Emma Survey found that 34% of respondents had experienced disrupted sleep as a result of night sweats. By replacing your thicker duvet with a lighter alternative in the spring and summer, you’re much less likely to experience night sweats in the warmer months.

If you’ve had an electric blanket under the sheets over the winter months, this is the perfect time to take it off and store it away until winter, as it won’t be needed as the temperature increases.

For the warmer months, you should consider investing in some lightweight, breathable bedding, like percale, cotton or linen sheets, to help keep you cool as you sleep.

Give every surface a good clean

The best thing to do is to make sure every nook and cranny has had a good clean, when you are spring cleaning your room. Firstly, you should dust every surface, as dusting can help improve air quality in your bedroom, which can help you get a good night’s sleep. Dusting your bedroom regularly will help to rid the air of dust particles and allergens that may linger as well.

This is the time you should also clean under your bed. Under your bed can harbour a lot of dust and dirt, and because it’s out of sight, you might not always remember it's there. If you want an easy cleaning solution, you can try a robot vacuum to clean up under the bed. This will give you time to get on with something else while the chore gets done.

Once you’ve done all you're cleaning you should clean up your floor, this should always be one of the last things you do. If your bedroom has a hardwood floor, give it a good hoover and then a thorough mop, and you’ll be ready to go. If your bedroom is carpeted, after hoovering, use a carpet cleaner to get any hidden bacteria out of your carpet.

Deep clean your mattress

Cleaning your mattress is something you should do around every six months. Cleaning your mattress regularly can help improve air quality in your bedroom. A 2016 study discovered that good air quality in the bedroom can help improve your quality of sleep. Here’s how you can clean your mattress.

6 steps to clean your mattress
  1. Firstly, remove all of the bedding from your bed.
  2. Using the upholstery attachment of your hoover, vacuum the mattress to remove any dust, dirt, and debris.
  3. Sprinkle some baking soda on the mattress and let it sit for at least a few hours, overnight if possible. The longer you can leave it, the better. Baking soda can help eliminate any odours, break down any debris and soak up any liquid that may be on the mattress.
  4. After letting the baking soda settle for a few hours, hoover the mattress again.
  5. Flip the mattress over and repeat.
  6. After you’ve repeated the process, let the mattress air out before putting your sheets back on.

Sometimes a deep clean won’t do the trick. You should be replacing your mattress every 6-8 years. If you need some help on what mattress to choose, check out our comparison tool to help you pick the right mattress.

Open your windows frequently

Getting fresh air in your bedroom is something you should do both while you’re cleaning and when you’re spending time in your bedroom. Having good ventilation and airflow will reduce the carbon dioxide accumulated and improve the air quality in your bedroom. A Dutch study found that having your windows or bedroom door open while you sleep can help improve your quality of sleep. The participants fell asleep quicker, slept for a longer period of time, and experienced deeper sleep. It may not always be possible to sleep with your window open, depending on the temperature and how noisy it is outside your bedroom, but try to leave it open during the day for a while, wherever possible.

Update the decor

While updating your decor isn’t a must for a spring clean, it can really brighten up a bedroom and you don’t need to do anything drastic for it to be effective. Adding some soft furnishings like cushions and throws in calming colours can help your brain to relax - a good option for this is green or pale blue. Another way in which you can incorporate calm colours to your bedroom is by adding some plants, such as aloe vera and snake plants, for example.
